Founded on Legacy, Loss and Promise

Founded in 2017 by entrepreneur Bonga Masoka, Splash Coatings Africa was born from a deeply personal journey. Inspired by growing up without a permanent home and a promise he made to build a home for his mother before her passing in 2012, Masoka envisioned a company that would use colour as a symbol of hope and fulfilment. That vision continues to live on in every home the brand helps transform.

The company’s foundation was strengthened through the acquisition of carefully researched paint formulations, developed and refined over more than 15 years. These formulations were designed to strike an ideal balance between environmental friendliness, durability, premium-quality finishes, and affordability — positioning Splash Coatings Africa as a competitive and conscious player in the paint industry.

South Africa’s First Black-Owned Premium Paint Brand

Today, Splash Coatings Africa stands proudly as South Africa’s first black-owned premium paint brand. Its growing footprint includes stores in Soweto, Soshanguve, and Pretoria, with national reach extended through Takealot. The brand offers a wide range of colours tailored to both residential and commercial needs, making premium finishes more accessible to South Africans.

From Garage Startup to Major Asset Owners

Splash Coatings Africa’s growth mirrors that of many ambitious, garage-sized startups. The company began by reselling single buckets of paint and servicing four-roomed homes and RDP houses. Over time, it evolved into a manufacturing operation with a sizeable factory and an expanded client base that now includes major asset owners such as Growthpoint and Burstone.

The Entrepreneur Behind the Brand

Bonga Masoka’s journey reflects a blend of creativity, policy insight, and social impact. He began his career with training in graphic design and painting at Central Johannesburg College in 2006, before pursuing undergraduate studies in Public Policy and Politics at the University of Cape Town. While still a student, he founded a social enterprise focused on Early Childhood Development. After graduating in 2014, Masoka returned to Johannesburg to work in a family business spanning agri-tech, green energy, and environmental rehabilitation of mining land — experience that would later inform Splash Coatings Africa’s sustainable ethos.

As Splash Coatings Africa continues to scale, its founding purpose remains unchanged: to use colour to restore pride, identity, and the feeling of home. What began as a personal promise has become a growing African brand, painting a future where more people can truly say they are home.
